Electronic Prescription Service to Continue

Leyland, Lancashire – September 22nd 2011 – The government has announced an acceleration in the dismantling of the National Programme for IT but confirmed that the electronic prescription service will continue.

In a statement this morning the Department of Health said, “The NPfIT achieved much in terms of infrastructure and this will be maintained, along with national applications, such as the summary care record and the electronic prescription service, which are crucial to improving patient safety and efficiency.”

A total of 18 GP practices and 1,559 pharmacy sites are now ready to use EPS release 2.  To date 112,133 prescriptions containing 256,767 items have been dispensed and 40,400 patient nominations have been set.

Cegedim Rx was the first PMR system supplier to receive full roll out approval for EPS release 2 in its Pharmacy Manager software on March 29th 2011 and has installed the functionality at over 275 pharmacies with another 600 orders in process.

Simon Driver, managing director at Cegedim Rx, said, “We were relatively confident that the electronic prescription service, along with Choose and Book would not be scrapped as its benefits will be  tangible, measurable and offer improved patient safety and other safeguards.  I think it is important to acknowledge that Cegedim Rx have put a great deal of effort and hard work into delivering  EPS and companies like ours were never part of the contractual arrangements that the NAO and Cabinet Select Committee were so critical of in their reports. Cegedim SA had to invest at some considerable commercial risk into the development of EPS and will not be fully reimbursed until EPS is deployed.”
