Preparing for the Reclassification of Pregabalin and Gabapentin

Preparing for the Reclassification of Pregabalin and Gabapentin

Following a public consultation and advice from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, gabapentinoids are to be reclassified on 1st April 2019.

The drugs Pregabalin and Gabapentin - used to treat anxiety, nerve pain and epilepsy - will be placed in the schedule 3 category under the Misuse of Drugs Regulation 2001. As a result, your electronic prescriptions will be affected.

Some of the changes you need to be aware of from Monday 1st April 2019 include:

  • Scripts which direct patients to take Pregabalin or Gabapentin as required (or any equivalent instruction) without a corresponding dosage, will not constitute a legal prescription.
  • Scripts produced for Pregabalin or Gabapentin will only be valid for 28 days.
  • It will not be possible to repeat dispense Pregabalin or Gabapentin
  • Pregabalin or Gabapentin will not be allowed on Repeat Authorisation (RA) or Repeat Dispensing (RD) in England/Wales
  • Pregabalin or Gabapentin will not be allowed on CMS prescriptions in Scotland
  • Pregabalin or Gabapentin will not be allowed on emergency supply

It is important that the whole team working in your pharmacy are aware of the reclassification of these drugs and understand what these changes mean for them. We recommend you read and share the PSNC's briefing.
